Hundreds of delicate white porcelain balls scattered on the beach became isolated fragments dwarfed by the vast expansive environment. When placed together as a group they made a stronger impact, gaining presence and strength in their group formations. This is in contrast to when pieces hung in the gallery and when they were placed on a plinth, where the impact and presence of each one was strong. One could liken it to a person standing up on a brightly lit stage as opposed to on a beach, where they become just a dot on the landscape. My intention was to highlight how important the individual is, yet how small one life is in the whole picture of existance. The rocks and sand on the beach have been made over generations of time. These elements appear lifeless, like the people in our family that have been and gone before us, however they are a solid and constant presence. The ocean, just as living people do, moves with life on its journey to the shore where one day gradually it subsides landing on the shore among its ancestors, the sand and rocks. The ocean and the shore are intricately woven together like a person's life and their ancestors. |
